Nasal Specific Therapy Q&A

What is nasal specific therapy?

Nasal specific therapy is a form of naturopathic treatment offered by very few doctors. The treatment may be beneficial for many conditions affecting the head and neck, including:

  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Snoring
  • Sleep apnea
  • TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder
  • Deviated septum
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Ear infections
  • Tinnitus
  • Headaches

Nasal specific therapy works by adjusting your skull bones through your nasal passages. This adjustment releases pressure and optimizes brain function.

The skull bones don’t fuse together, so they may shift and become misaligned throughout life. At birth, the skull plates move and may not return to the right place. The bones can go further if you suffer a fall, an impact when playing sports, or other head injuries.

If you have skull misalignments, your body compensates by altering the way you move. This often causes headaches, chronic pain issues, and breathing problems. Realigning the skull bones with nasal specific therapy may improve central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) activity, which may help restore your body’s balance.

What techniques are used for nasal specific therapy?

To adjust the skull bones, Dr. Gurevich lubricates a finger cot (a latex glove covering just the finger) and inserts it into your nasal passages. The cot connects to a blood pressure bulb that Dr. Gurevich gently squeezes when everything is in place.

Squeezing the bulb inflates the cot, which expands and applies pressure to the bones lining your nasal passages. As the finger cot inflates, you take in and hold a deep breath. This allows Dr. Gurevich’s finger cot to enter the nasopharynx (the top of your throat, at the back of your mouth). She holds the other nostril closed to ensure no air escapes.

The inflation pushes against the bones while Dr. Gurevich’s hands guide them outward, causing them to unlock. After the bones move, they continue shifting until they become properly realigned.

With continuous nasal specific therapy, your skull shape starts to normalize. When this occurs, you might not need medication or surgery for conditions caused by skull misalignment.

What benefits does nasal specific therapy offer?

Nasal specific therapy is one of the most successful types of cranial manipulation and has many benefits. It’s safe for most patients because it’s a nonsurgical procedure that Dr. Gurevich performs in-office.

In most cases, nasal specific therapy is pain free. You might feel some minor pressure in your nose and head during the treatment, but no significant discomfort.
